Continuous windows on the south wall of the ground floor provide views into the tree canopies and lake beyond from the dining and living areas. On the garden level, a new double height family room was created with a new steel stair to the main level. A second floor addition provided four bedrooms, each with access to a continuous south facing deck. On the ground floor, a largely glass wall of windows and a door, faces the garden from the dining area and open kitchen beyond. A powder room was added and the existing kitchen renovated with custom cherry wood cabinetry and slate counters. An ipe deck was added outside the dining area with a large overhang to shade the house in the summer. A new exterior entrance was also added to provide direct access to the extended basement. Abandoned in 1978 and poorly modified since that time, this renovation looks to uncover the remaining schoolhouse interior and modify the existing addition to provide a year-round residence. The recent addition has been extended upward to provide a second storey for bedrooms while the ground floor accommodates living and service rooms. The original schoolhouse is the point of entry. In this open space, where the original roof structure is visible, are the kitchen and dining areas. With the addition of a generous screened porch and mudroom as well as a large deck, the living areas for the house are extended for the warmer months. Sustainable practices have informed the application of passive technologies for this rural project. A high performance envelope of stucco and metal clad the exterior walls and roof. The building is heated with an in-floor hydronic system, supplemented with both wood &amp; gas stoves. By opening up the kitchen to the dining room and adding an island along with re-locating the exterior entrance, the kitchen became both brighter and more functional even though it’s size was reduced by the installation of a Powder Room. The 2nd floor washroom was also updated while retaining its original character.
